What is MERV? MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This rating measures how much matter can pass through your air filter. These values vary and you may have seen this on the side of your filter, possibly a MERV 8 at your home or business. A MERV 8 will trap things such as mold spores, pet dander, dust mites, aerosol sprays, etc. This filter type is the most popular, and what Expert suggests to all of our homeowners.
When looking at a MERV rating you may think that the higher the number the better. However, that is not the case. The higher the MERV rating, the smaller the pores on the filter are. Higher MERV can cause restricted airflow to your furnace. When airflow is restricted this can cause the system to use more energy.
Replacing your furnace filter should be a task that you should always keep on your to-do list.
