STTF Heating and Cooling Training Grant

Expert Heating and Cooling, Inc., was founded in 1975 on the principals of quality, integrity and service. Mark Angellotti has carried on that tradition in training when he acquired the business in 1998. Angellotti was well aware of the growth potential having previously served as the Territory Manager for Carrier Great Lakes, Expert’s primary material supplier. Starting in a 2,400 square foot shop in Downtown Trenton, moving to a 4,200 square foot shop in Woodhaven while our newest building located in Taylor on Northline just west of Telegraph weighs in at a hefty 21,500 square feet. The result of these moves; business has expanded to serve a wider variety of HVAC needs across the Metro Detroit area. The company has transitioned in the last 15 years from 99% residential replacement and service, to a mix of 55-60% commercial heating and cooling installation and service.
In 2014, as a result of relocation and significant commercial business growth, Expert identified the need for an aggressive training program for its entire staff. This included the newly hired apprentices as well as recently promoted sales and project management employees, needed to meet the business demand.
In March of 2015, Expert began training with funds provided by the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) State of Michigan, Southeast Michigan Community Alliance (SEMCA) and the STTF program. Working directly with the staff from Henry Ford College they developed a program specifically tailored for Expert Heating and Cooling on Project Management that establish best practices in the industry. This was quickly followed up with basic electricity, installation code, brazing fundamentals, EPA, and NATE certification classes for many of their installation apprentices and service technicians. In all, 85% of their employees received training from the STTF program.
The training helped develop Expert’s young work force quickly, allowing Expert to add five new vehicles to the fleet, while adding an additional seven employees in the fall of 2015. The group is hopefully additional grants might be available for future trainings.
